How It Works

Who does what in an immigration DNA case.

Immigration DNA cases follow a strict sequence. Knowing which step you are on tells you exactly what NorthStar can do next.

    Agency request

    You receive a notice or request from USCIS, IRCC, an embassy, or a consulate. Not every immigration matter requires DNA testing.

    You open the lab case

    The petitioner or authorized customer opens the case directly with an AABB-accredited relationship-testing laboratory.

  3. 03
    Laboratory authorization

    The laboratory establishes the case and provides or approves the required collection process for each participant.

  4. 04
    NorthStar collects in Michigan

    We perform the authorized Michigan-side collection under documented chain of custody and return specimens to the laboratory.

  • AABB Relationship Testing accreditation is required for immigration petitions; the analysis is performed by an accredited laboratory.
  • Authorized in-person collection for Michigan participants under documented chain of custody.
  • Coordination with the laboratory's instructions for overseas participants at the designated embassy or consulate.
  • Sealed specimens and documentation returned to the laboratory, which releases results per the agency's instructions.

Who opens the immigration DNA case?
The petitioner or authorized customer opens the official case directly with an AABB-accredited relationship-testing laboratory. NorthStar does not select the laboratory or initiate the laboratory case on your behalf — we coordinate and perform the authorized Michigan-side collection once the laboratory establishes the case.
How is the overseas participant tested?
Overseas collection is coordinated through the accredited laboratory and the designated U.S. embassy, consulate, or other approved location. Collection materials are never sent independently to an overseas participant.
Do I need DNA testing for my immigration case?
Not every immigration matter requires DNA testing. Follow the instructions in the notice or request you received from the applicable government authority, and speak with your attorney or accredited laboratory before ordering.
Does a DNA result guarantee approval?
No. DNA testing addresses only the claimed biological relationship. It does not guarantee approval of a visa, petition, passport, citizenship claim, or any other immigration benefit.
Who receives the results?
The accredited laboratory controls the release of results according to the applicable government instructions — typically sealed and sent directly to the requesting agency, embassy, consulate, or attorney.
What relationships can be tested?
Parent-and-child cases are the most common. Sibling, grandparentage, avuncular, and other relationships are also coordinated, though these require laboratory review to confirm the appropriate participant configuration.
